Ubuntu Summit 26.04: connected by open source

Mauro Gaspari writes about the Ubuntu Summit 26.04 which has ended, but energy is still ‘buzzing’. We’re reminded about how and where it took place, given a list of some key presentations (with links so we can watch them on YouTube), a link to the complete playlist, and more. Stonking Snapshot 2 released

Utkarsh Gupta on behalf of the Ubuntu Release team announces the publication of Stonking Stingray Snapshot 2 for Ubuntu and flavors. We’re given example links showing us where to find them, and reminded of a cdimage change that has taken place. As well, we are reminded these images are not being produced as production ready.

Anbox Cloud on C4A metal

Hugo Huang mentions the “historical friction of emulation overhead” with running Android workloads in the cloud. Anbox Cloud and Google’s Cloud Arm Axion C4A-metal instances are a “massive leap forward … eliminating the performance penalty of x86-to-Arm translation”. We’re given details on why this is a “game-changer”, including quotes by Alistair Delva from Google’s Cloud Android team, plus a link should we need to learn more.

New Temporary Kubuntu Council

Merlijn Sebrechts, of the Ubuntu Community Council, tells us a temporary Kubuntu Council has been appointed to end a ‘governance gridlock’. We’re told the Kubuntu Council will consist of Aaron Rainbolt, Michael Mikowski, Rick Timmis, Rik Mills and Scarlett Moore, until 24 June 2027.

Some recent cdimage changes for improved consistency

Skia alerts us to cdimage changes made to improve consistency between the various Ubuntu products & flavors. We’re reminded of the old structure, told of some changes made by Utkarsh Gupta which result in the new outlined tree structure. A key ‘breaking changes’ summary highlights differences for users. We are told “nothing is set in stone” so if changes break our workflows, to come and talk to the Ubuntu Foundations team.

Terraform LXD Provider 3.0.0 has been released

Din Music announces Terraform LXD Provider 3.0.0, telling us this is a major release focused on “improving provider behavior, modernizing resource handling, and aligning the provider more closely with current LXD capabilities”. We’re provided links to learn more, including the release notes, before being given a list of highlights, brief upgrade notes, and told where to go if bugs, regression or other issues are encountered.

Xfwl4’s First Preview Release [Wayland]

Brian Tarricone announces the first preview release of xfwl4, which is Xfce’s Wayland compositor. We’re told it contains “close to six months of work” and needs some wider use, so we’re told to consider this an ‘alpha’ release. Thanks is given to the Xfce core team, before we’re given the source tarball link, the issue tracker, Git repository, and more. A list of “things that won’t work” is provided (with links to reported issues), and we’re asked to “give it a spin”.

KDE Plasma 6.7.1 Desktop Is Out with Fixes for Kickoff, Discover, and KWin

Marcus Nestor reports on the release of KDE Plasma 6.7.1 which contains a number of bug/regression fixes. Marcus gives an outline of many fixes included, a link to the full changelog, and more.

Fwupd 2.0.21 Brings Fixes For More Than 250 Potential Security Issues Found Via AI

Michael Larabel reminds us Fwupd 2.1 is the latest stable release, but reports the release of Fwupd 2.0.21 with more than 250 potential security fixes backported to it. We’re told these flaws were recently detected by AI/LLM security research, given a quote from Richard Hughes, and a link to the GitHub page for more.

Latest Steam Client Update Improves PipeWire Session Logic on Linux

Academy Software Foundation Announces The “Wayland For Artists Working Group”

Michael Larabel informs us that the Academy Software Foundation has “announced the formation of a new working group to help with Wayland adoption for artists”. Michael tells us this will “ensure the Wayland transition is smooth for artists [there are] no gaps in feature/functionality”, giving us a quote and a link to the official announcement.

NVIDIA 580.173.02 Linux Graphics Driver Released for GeForce 10 Series

Marcus Nestor writes about the release of an updated NVIDIA 580.173.02 graphics driver for GeForce 10 Series GPUs that addresses a number of reported bugs. Along with descriptions of some of the fixed bugs, we’re given a link to the release notes. Marcus finally covers better drivers (595, 610) for those using more modern GeForce hardware.
